Picking a forklift isn’t about the badge on the mast — it’s about matching the machine to the work. Get it wrong and you either overpay for capacity you’ll never use, or you undersize and end up with a machine that’s slow, unsafe, or worn out early. Here’s how we work through it with customers.
1. Start with the heaviest load
Capacity is the first number, but it’s not the only one. A forklift’s rated capacity assumes a standard load centre — usually measured to the middle of a standard pallet. Long, awkward or top-heavy loads shift that centre forward and cut the safe capacity. Tell us your heaviest load and how it sits on the forks, and we’ll spec to the real-world figure, not the brochure one.
2. Indoors, outdoors, or both?
This decides the power type more than anything else:
- Electric suits indoor work — warehouses, cool stores, food production — where fumes and noise are a problem. Modern lithium options top up through the shift.
- Diesel is the outdoor workhorse: strong torque, pneumatic tyres, happy in the wet.
- LPG and dual fuel sit in between — clean enough for well-ventilated indoor work, quick to refuel for jobs that move in and out all day.
3. How high, and how tight?
Standard counterbalance forklifts cover most yard and warehouse heights. But if you’re running narrow aisles or racking past six metres, a reach truck will get more pallets into the same floor space. For short dock-to-racking moves, a powered pallet truck or stacker is cheaper and easier on your team than a full forklift.
4. What’s the ground like?
Smooth concrete and a gravel yard are different worlds. Rough, soft or uneven ground calls for a rough terrain machine on large, deep-tread tyres — a standard warehouse truck will struggle and wear out fast.
5. Buy or lease?
Owning outright makes sense when the machine will work for years and you want the asset. A fully-maintained lease bundles the machine and its servicing into a known monthly cost — no surprise repair bills — which suits fleets that want predictable monthly costs.
